Both produce a beautiful surface on day one. They diverge on cost, winter behavior, repairability, and formality — and choosing on looks alone is how homeowners buy the wrong construction for their climate and use. Here’s the honest sort.
Dry-laid: the New England native
The build: compacted gravel structure, stone-dust setting bed, stones fitted tight, joints swept (the full base anatomy). Why our climate loves it: the assembly flexes — frost can nudge a stone a hair and the system absorbs it; water drains through rather than sitting on a slab looking for a crack. The repair story is the quiet superpower: any stone lifts in minutes, the base corrects, the stone relays — a $200 fix instead of a demolition. The look: classic New England — tight-fit natural joints, the surface that paves the region’s hundred-year walkways. The cost: the lower of the two, every time — no slab, no mortar trade, less labor.
Wet-laid: the formal option (with responsibilities)
The build: a properly poured, reinforced, drained concrete slab; stone set in mortar; joints grouted. What it buys: a monolithic, furniture-perfect surface with crisp mortared joints — the formal estate look — and the necessary method for mortared step treads, pool coping, and stone over existing sound concrete (a genuine wet-laid specialty: a tired slab gets a bluestone second life). What it demands: the slab is the foundation and the liability — it needs correct thickness, reinforcement, drainage, and expansion joints, because in freeze-thaw country a flawed slab telegraphs every crack up through the stone, and mortar-joint repairs are masonry surgery, not an afternoon. Wet-laid done right is excellent; wet-laid done cheap is the most expensive patio you’ll buy twice.
The decision table, honestly
Choose dry-laid when: it’s a patio or walkway on soil, budget matters, you value repair-forever flexibility, and the tight-joint New England look is the goal — which is why it’s the default answer for most of the projects we quote. Choose wet-laid when: you’re surfacing an existing sound slab, mortared steps or coping are in the scope, or the formal grouted-joint aesthetic is non-negotiable and the budget respects the slab it requires. Mixed projects are normal: dry-laid field with wet-laid steps is a classic, correct combination — each element built the way its job demands.
The questions that expose a bad bid (either method)
For dry: excavation depth? compaction lifts? stone thickness? For wet: slab spec and reinforcement? drainage plan? expansion joints?
