When patios fail in New England, they fail underground — and because the base is invisible on day one, it’s where bad contractors hide their savings. Layer one: the excavation (where corners get cut first)
A proper New England patio starts 8–12 inches down — through the topsoil, into subsoil that can be compacted. Water is the patio’s only real enemy; pitch is how you show it the exit. A patio that puddles is a patio pre-loading its own frost damage.
The stone layer (finally) — and why thickness matters
